Eligibility for Retirement

Safety Tier 1:

  • Age 50 and 10 years of service credit, or
  • 20 years of service credit, regardless of age, or
  • Age 70, regardless of service credit

Safety PEPRA Tier (hired on or after January 1, 2013):

  • Age 50 and 5 years of service credit, or
  • Age 70, regardless of service credit

General Tier 1 and Tier 2:

  • Age 50 and 10 years of service credit, or
  • 30 years of service credit, regardless of age, or
  • Age 70, regardless of service credit

General PEPRA Tier (hired on or after January 1, 2013):

  • Age 52 and 5 years of service credit, or
  • Age 70, regardless of service credit

Eligibility Service

As an active or deferred member, your years of “eligibility service” will continue to increase, thereby helping you meet the minimum service credit requirements noted above. However, your monthly VCERA benefit will be based on the service credit you earned and/or purchased.
